Hi all,
I am new to owning chickens and have just bought 5 bantam x LF hens that should start laying soon, they are still a little young. I am planning on having laying hens and also doing a run of about 10 meat birds in March. My husband and I have decided to repurpose anything useful that we have instead of buying or building new. We recently bought a house and it had a insulated dog house and 10x 6 ft chain link kennel attached that we wont use so we repurposed it as the chicken house and it turned out pretty nice, surprisingly. I have been doing crazy amounts of research to get ready for the "ladies" and am very excited to get things rolling and start to collect eggs and meat to be more self sufficient. I am looking forward to all of the insight available on this site.

Welcome to the flock. A lot of chicken folks repurpose materials - many use shipping pallets or crates from large appliances. Some stores just throw them out. Craig's list is usually a "fertile dumping ground" for people disposing of dog runs, chicken coops and sometimes chickens and coops. Also some folks head for "rehab" stores and make some great finds for doors and windows.
