Hi everyone! I’m so happy to join this community. I’ve been a long time listener and today a first time caller. Thanks in advance for lending your chicken keeping expertise! Here are my answers to the intro questions!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
YES brand new. We get our first five chicks in a few weeks.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None. They are coming! I’m so excited and honestly a little nervous. I hope I’m not getting in over my head!

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have on order: a silver-laced orpington, buff orpington, 2 Easter eggers and a welsummer.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I’m most looking forward to having new pets to add to our home, giving my two young sons the experience of raising our own food (eggs, not the chickens), caring for a pet, and collecting eggs! Fresh eggs! Oh yes.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Writing, reading a good book, travel, cooking.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I’m a working mom in tech, based in the Bay Area (Northern California). I have two boys, ages 2 and a 4.5 YO. We have a small mixed breed terrier (she was totally fine with our rabbits, so I have high hopes she’ll get along with the chickens!), and a goldfish. We have a nice sized backyard where we spend a LOT of time year round. It’s California!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I’ve been a longtime follower and have always been impressed by how kind, helpful and knowledgeable everyone is here. You all helped me make the decision to bring chickens into our family’s backyard! Thank you <3

Great intro! I have (among others) a Buff Orp, Easter Eggers and a Welsummer, too. All are wonderful chickens with completely different temperaments, and they should provide a lovely basket of colorful eggs.

Since BYC helped you make the decision to get chickens, I hope we are equally helpful once your flock arrives. As you know, this is a great community of caring, experienced and generous folks. They have helped me immensely in times of trouble and offered congratulations when things went well.

Welcome to our flock, and best wishes with yours! Let us know when the babies arrive.
