Welcome to BYC. Great intro wannabee chicken mama from California. Did you make or buy you’re first coop?.

Do post a few pics after you’re chicks arrived. I hope you find and get all the answers you’re looking for on this amazing platform.
We bought an Eglu Cube with extended run, and plan to free range in our backyard as well. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Good morning, and welcome to BYC! Congratulations on your upcoming flock. Have you started your coop and run?
We bought an Eglu Cube with run and plan to free range in our backyard a bit. Probabl6 need fencing to keep them off the pavement part though, I heard the poop is hard to keep up with, even with power washer!

Great intro! I have (among others) a Buff Orp, Easter Eggers and a Welsummer, too. All are wonderful chickens with completely different temperaments, and they should provide a lovely basket of colorful eggs.

Since BYC helped you make the decision to get chickens, I hope we are equally helpful once your flock arrives. As you know, this is a great community of caring, experienced and generous folks. They have helped me immensely in times of trouble and offered congratulations when things went well.

Welcome to our flock, and best wishes with yours! Let us know when the babies arrive.
Thanks for the warm welcome! Which of the breeds do you think are best for kiddos? I heard buff orps are “the golden labs” of the chicken world :) we are looking for a colorful egg basket as well as sweet temperament, so I’m glad to hear your comments. I know they can all be different as individuals too. I’m hoping our welsummer isn’t too loud, I’ve heard they can be quite the song singers ? Lol

My Buff Orp -- the last of my original hens -- is the queen of all chickens. Honey doesn't want to be picked up, although she will tolerate it if she must, But like ALL of my birds, Honey will gladly stand guard at the back door to see when I might be coming out with grapes -- their favorite treat!

And, when I first got chickens, I was told to use the same phrase whenever I wanted my chickens to come to me. To this day, if I step outside and ask, "Where is my fine hen?" Honey will come running. For the rest, all I have to say is, "Grapes!"

As far as interactions, my Speckled Sussex, Bronwyn, likes to be thisclose when I am outside. She will "help" me plant flowers and veggies; unpile the scooped coop poop; and scratch through the buckets of collected muck. She is also quite jealous if other birds are too close to me.

My Easter Eggers are tolerant being picked up but they, like Lottie, the Welsummer, are among my flightier birds. And, yes, Lottie is Very Vocal when she lays or when someone else is in her favorite nest box (because we all know that in a coop with five identical nest boxes, one is always the best and in the most demand).

Of course, your experience may be completely different. One thing is sure, you're about to embark on endless adventures!

Chicks can’t free range (unsupervised). But you probably know this already. There are too many dangers outside for them.

I let my 6 week old chicks free range
one hour before sunset now. Supervised by their broodies and a human. After some time they go inside again by themselves.

My broodies take their chicks out as early as 2 days old.

I've never lost a chick to predation.
