from Alabama. Glad you joined us. My DF is a vet & I hate to say it, but I think I knew more about taking care of chickens when we first started with them. So I agree that there's definitely not enough focus on them. So sorry that you lost your favorite
Hello and welcome to BYC from Ohio! Gosh you must be busy with being a vet and raising a family! So sorry you lost one of your chickens. I really do think sometimes they can have a heart attack or stroke and die unexpectedly like that, but you never do know. I also think they can be literally "scared to death" when a predator tries to break into their coop.
I hope you continue to enjoy those chickens and maybe get a few more! It's great to involve the kids too. My son Joe, who was 15 when I got my first chickens, just loves them. (I truly didn't think a teenager who loves video games would take an interest in chickens, but he just loves them.)
My first three chickens were three golden buff hybrids, and one of them was taken by an unknown predator. My son and I just bawled! You can really get attached!
