I have 11 chickens -3 barred rock's (1 rooster), 4 Rhode island's and 4 new Hampshire. I've been reading posts for awhile and learning for a few months. My youngest is proudly holding the rooster.

A word of caution. Chickens will sometimes see the white of your eye and think it is food. My husband got a piece of eye pecked out by a chicken. They can be so fast when they do it that you don't really have time to respond. The eyes of kids are closer to the chicken than adults when they hold them. I never let kids hold or have chickens on their laps without having a hand close to the child's head to stop any such behavior. The way your child is holding the chicken is fairly safe and how I would have a child hold a chicken. But since you are a new chicken owner I thought it best to warn you of the dangers of chicks (or adults) with chickens when it comes to eyes. Here is a BYC thread on the topic https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/do-chickens-ever-peck-at-eyes.509355/ One poster says they are legally blind in one eye because of being pecked in the eye as a kid. And a youtube vid of it happening to an unsuspecting man
