We really don't want to kill them any advice you can give me would be great. The biggest one is a meat chicken and the only one the kids have named. I would really like to keep them all alive.

You may click on the link below and read my post #5. This is what I did to keep my meat birds living beyond 13 weeks. I will say again, that I wouldn't suggest getting a meat bird to be a pet. You have to have the time and energy and information on how to keep them alive and then that still may not work. I was just lucky enough that mine are still living and they do not have any leg problems or heart problems because of their weight. If this is your first time raising chickens, you may want to re-think keeping a meat bird beyond 13 weeks.

Welcome from Romadfox in SC. I am actually from Ohio, (farm in Chillicothe and lived in Xenia), but the Air Force took us around the world and landed us in SC. I have 6 hens, 9 weeks old. I have 2 X Buff Orpintons, 2 X Barred Rocks, and 2 X Rhoade Island Reds. I really want to Buckeyes cause it would be so cool to have a chicken developed in my home state. I have built a log coop for them which I am documenting on my BYC page. If you haven't built one yet, check it out as it is cheap and easy to make. Good luck with your girls and welcome!
