I’m brand new, just hatched 3 Silkies yesterday. I got a incubator on a auction site and over Christmas break decided I would test it out with Trade Joe eggs. Thank goodness nothing hatched. And I decide to seek out local silkie eggs. I got 5 eggs one never progressed an one beautiful bowtie showgirl passed after piping when the electric company decided to fix a pole and shut off power on hatch day. I rushed home and they were ice cold. I ran the heater with wet towels over the vents in my van for 2 hours before I drove to electric company’s work site and explained this was life or death and they had the power on by the time I got home just down the street. I wish I asked sooner. But she did not make it. I was so hoping for a showgirl, but day one and so for I still have three healthy little chicks. Fingers crossed.

The major reason I wanted Silkies is I have a Standard Poodle service dog and have fallen in love with fluffy standard poodle breed and would love one in every color. But it would be a nightmare and not to fare to leave them home all day alone to become bored untrained terrorist. So light bulb moment…Silky chickens.

I have 2 college aged kids still at home and we could never have pets. But now we can and what an amazing experience to watch life come in to the world and be responsible for their well being together. It has increased our quality time together. So much fun, might be addicting.

I work and do dog sports and now chickens. Who knows what’s next.

Thanks for being here and sharing all your knowledge and experiences.
