Hello! I am a newbie in the chicken keeping world and need some help. I have 11 chicks that are 3 weeks old, I have 3 Hubbard golden comets, 3 tetra tints, 2 buff orpingtons, 2 Easter eggers and 1 black australorp. They are still in their brooder for now and are growing and doing really well, all except for the 1 black australorp. For the past week she has been anti social with the other chicks and I haven't actually witnessed her eating like I have the others. Granted I am not down there with them constantly, but the other chicks will mingle and go about their business with me sitting there and "Delia" will not. She stands in the corner by herself all puffed up with her eyes closed. I have no idea what could be wrong with her. Today when I was down with them I did see one of the other chicks pecking her a little, I know they have a pecking order so is "Delia" just at the bottom of it or should I be more concerned? Has anyone had a similar situation? She is also the only chick that won't come to me when I sit down and call them over.

Sorry about your chick. Sounds like she has coccidiosis. They are at the right age to have this issue. Stands in the corner, fluffed up, won't eat or drink. Do you see diarrhea or any blood in the stool? Classic signs of cocci. Are they on medicated feed? If they are get them off and go to your feed store and get some Corid or just plain Amprolium. (you can't use this medication and feed medicated feed with amprolium at the same time. You will need plain non medicated feed with this med.) This is put in the water for 5 days. Offer it up to all of them. The mixing instructions will be on the bottle. Do this as soon as possible as cocci can kill them quick.

Chicks and chickens know when another member of the flock is sick and will pick on them to either drive them off or kill them. This is the way they protect the flock. If they are picking on her too much, you may need to separate her until you get the meds in them. It works fast and you should see improvement in a day or 2.

Oh no that doesn't sound good. Yes they are on the medicated feed, our southern states is closed this evening but I can make it there first thing in the morning. I haven't noticed any diarrhea but their stools do look a little different than usual. A little more runny than usual. How could this happen if I have had them on the medicated feed?!

Just to update everyone on my sick chick, I went to southern states on Monday and got some probiotic supplement and some liquid antibacterial supplement that they suggested. I have been adding it both to their water as directed and she is doing much MUCH better! I have also not seen anymore runny stools in the brooder. Thanks for everyone's help and input!
