Hi
I have 2 six week old ducklings. I believe they are perking if my research is correct. It has been a learning experience for sure. Never thought I would like ducks when my daughter talked me into them but now they are part of the family. It’s so cute when they see me and just start quacking and shaking their tails cause their happy to see me. My kids named them Pickles and Skittles, however I’m not sure who is who cause they now look the same. I’ve already learned a lot from this sight and look forward to learning lots more.

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your ducks. Here's a link to the duck forum -

Welcome!

While you will read a lot about "chicken math," be aware that "duck math" happens, too. Especially if you are looking for balance, in my case.

I started with four adorable day-old Indian runner ducks, hand picked from a breeder who had dozens. As they grew up, it became apparent that I am an expert at picking drakes; three of my four originals were boys. Poor Quinn was terribly outnumbered, so I waited until the breeder had some older girls to balance the equation. Drakes who want to mate can be extremely assertive and inflict a lot of wear and tear on their hens.

When I reached a total of four girls and two boys (my beautiful black drake Hadley met with a murderous mink who had just raided one of my chicken coops), it became clear that the boys were still overworking the girls.

So, back to the breeder, who assured me she had learned to vent sex babies. Of the six I first picked out of the group, five were males They went back into the flock and I came home with three "girls." Oddly, one "girl" was much quieter than the rest. And a little larger.

That's because Lane turned out to be, yes, another drake. He is now quite territorial over his own two quackers and chases off the older drakes. The breeder offered to trade in Lane and replace him with a hen, but in my short experience, the new hen would have been the odd girl out. Now, I just have a flock of six runners and a flock of three.

Once in a while, they will interact. It's not what I was hoping for, but how can you not love a flock -- or flocks -- of ducks? The more the merrier!
