First time for everything.....

Very young chicks do not know about food and water when they arrive.  You need to tap on the feeder and water dish, as their mother would do to show them  where they are. After one chick figures it out, then all will. Some places will ship small orders  ie., "My Pet Chickens," also sexed pullets for an extra price.

Most hatcheries want to ship a certain number per order, so there are enough chicks to keep each other warm.  Otherwise they add cockerel chicks to serve as live heat packs. That is how little they value male chicks. But better than destroying ones that won't sell.
question how old is old enough for chicks to have a little earthworm meat???

I'm new to this, but I I started giving my chicks mealworms at 3-4wks (My oldest chicks are at this age right now). I'd give them earthworms if I had them. I offered them grit (fine chick grit) with it as well. They love it and a few are in my hands immediately when I open their cage. Unfortunately, my favorite and sweetest chick is a roo. I'll have to rehome him : (
