Cute chicks! Good luck with them, and your coop building.

Thats a ADORABLE flock you have there ,im new here as well and i just got my little rhode island reds Thursday they were 2days old lost one shipping shock i was told its day 4now and i haven't lost another one wish me luck good luck with your little flock.

@Loud Hen , how many chicks did you get? When they ship from hatcheries, do they put any food/water in with the chicks. I guess I'm not sure how they would do it, but I've always been curious.

Not LoudHen, but they do not put feed/water in the boxes with day old chicks. The benefit of shipping them as day olds is that they are still supported by the nutrients absorbed from the yolk just prior to hatching so they are supported wihtout needing feed/water.
When older birds are shipped lettuce, watermelon, etc is often included to provide a source of hydration.

O
Interesting!
gray mare is right the only draw back is this way my first time ordering chicks so young some of my didnt understand the drunking process even some where low on eating some it took a little extra working some places will ship as little as 3r4r5 but some hatchery will not ship unless you oder 20r25at least.

Very young chicks do not know about food and water when they arrive. You need to tap on the feeder and water dish, as their mother would do to show them where they are. After one chick figures it out, then all will. Some places will ship small orders ie., "My Pet Chickens," also sexed pullets for an extra price.

Most hatcheries want to ship a certain number per order, so there are enough chicks to keep each other warm. Otherwise they add cockerel chicks to serve as live heat packs. That is how little they value male chicks. But better than destroying ones that won't sell.

yep true to all about this is how i got mine to eat is tapping like making a pecking sound like a mother hen would do and i make a chipping sound they come running and watch a mostly worked with two chicks at time and two feeders as i have 20 it didnt take the others long to get the peck of it .
