First time hatch started last night! ??

Candled 4 of my lighter brown eggs and I got life!!!! So excited :) All 4 had veins and a little wiggley chick! The other I will check either tonight or tomorrow they are not dark brown but still a little darker shelled so I don't know how well I will be able to see. Yipppe

Day 10 candled 24 eggs removed 6 that we're not good. We saw movement in a lot of the eggs. My daughters were so excited. We think one egg has two chicks in it and they were both moving? This is so great we are learning and having fun. Incubators anonymous here I come;)

Do a search for twin chick hatches ... I think I remember hearing that they will have to have help.

Day 10 and I am down to 11...started with 14. I was a nonfertile egg, one I dropped and cracked it ugh and today i pulled one because it was very porous and it appeared to be a nonfertile. I cracked to to see and here is a little wiggly chick. I felt horrible but I could not see one vein and it was so porous and I read they are not good hatching and I didn't want a exploded egg. Oh first time hatch so I have alot to learn.

One the bright side I have 11 chicks doing good so far!

I love your home made brooder what a great idea!

Thanks! I just couldn't get rid of it and had no room in my new kitchen. So I of course thought of my chicks :) removed the door panels and attached chicken wire...easy I do plan on making a ramp for them to go from bottom level to top level and some lower roosts. It will be awhile before they can be out in the pen. Winter here in Michigan just keeps on going :(

Not to make you feel bad -- this is for future reference. Eggs very rarely explode in normal incubation cycles. They only time I've ever had it happen was when I found as communal nest of guinea eggs late in the season. I wasn't good at candling, so I set them all and apparently some were already pretty ripe and a week of so into it -- BOOM. So, don't do that!

I never throw out an egg until it is several days past it's date. Even then, if nothing has hatched, I let it go a week, sometimes they hatch late. If I get some to hatch, any in that batch that are not obviously still alive 2 days later are removed.

If I found one cracked or seeping liquid, I would get rid of it also, but those are very rare, at least for me.

I don't worry too much about egg shell quality or anything. If I want the chick from that egg, it goes into the incubator, otherwise the egg is eaten. A surprising number of malformed eggs hatch anyway. I would be disappointed if I paid a lot for an egg that was badly formed, but if they are "free" or cheap, I don't sweat it -- I hatch it!
