Please bear with me if this is a newbie question. This little Jersey Giant hatched about an hour ago. I understand that JGs make fairly small chicks normally, but I am a little concerned about this one anyway. It has some kind of meaty growth on its rear, well below its vent. I know the picture is hard to see, especially with an all-black chick. The vent does not show in the picture, it is up under the tail abd looks fine to me. I don’t think it’s a prolapse, it does not come out of the vent. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is it just left over from the egg? Like I said, first timer. I will try to get better pics when it dries, I was afraid of chilling it. Thanks!

Looks like the navel hasn't closed up all the way. Keep it separated from the other babies for now (if you have any hatched) and it should eventually heal up. Here's some things you can do to make sure it doesn't get infected- there's a pretty good post on this old thread.

Great! Thank you so much! This chick is the only pure Jersey Giant I’ve hatched so far (its much-loved father died defending the flock from a skunk). That means this baby is very very precious to me!❤️

Aww, RIP to Dad Jersey Giant. I think he will be okay if you keep it clean and don't let the others peck at it, otherwise it will pop, for lack of a better word. You can always make him his own little section in the brooder, in a basket or something.

Good idea. The hatchmates seem relatively good natured and aren’t over-rowdy, so it sounds like we should be ok. The swollen part has shrunk to 1/2 it’s previous size since my first post, so I guess the healing process has begun! The chick is in the brooder with the first few hatchers, as they were dry. The wet ones are still in the incubator. 11 total so far out of a possible 46.

Thank you for your kind words for Hero. Most of the others are just well-loved birds, he was my son. God named him Hero, and that’s exactly what he was. He was only 2 years old.😭❤✝

BTW, 2 more JGs have hatched, both blue. I’m not sure about one, but the other might be Hero’s!❤

RIP Hero and thank you for your babies may they rise to your heroness, hope the little one gets better hour by hour, I have 2 black jersey's and i love them, I hatched out from shipped eggs this season 3 black copper marans and 2 salmon faverolles to add flavor to my flock, I am also hatching (broody hen abandonmen) 4 old english game mille fleur banties

Little Coal Oil is a little withdrawn and sleeps a lot, but the umbilicus continues to shrink. She is the sweetest little darling, cuddled on my chest a few minutes this morning, and my heart melted! 18 hatchlings so far, a few definitely Hero’s and a few maybes! His legacy lives on. Thank you all for your assistance.❤
