First time hatcher

some are slower to change than others... my bator thermo thats built in says 92 degrees when in fact its 99.5 degrees!!! I NEVER go by that one NEVER LOL!!

Okay, so I put my eggs in the bator yesterday and I just candled one. I saw a small pinkish/reddish dot a little smaller than my pinky nail. Is it possible that it's the chick? It also moved around when the egg was moved.....

I dont know, I dont candle until day 7 as the embryos are very delicate at this stage. It could have been or been a blood spot from the hen laying.

I am not sure what to tell you about thermos

We NEVER get blood spots. Could the chicks have started to grow while I was still collecting eggs for a week? They were in 70/75 degree temperatures. Anyways, the probe thermometer I took out of the bator because it seemed so inaccurate. The digital hydrometer\thermometer reads 99 degrees and the thermometer that came with my bator reads around 101/101.5, so I guess the temp is somewhere between there...........hopefully!

OK. You want to use the thermometer you calibrated. If you cannot use that one, stick it in your incubator for a couple hours, get the reading and compare it to your other thermometers. Then you'll know how far off they are reading. As for the dot, it's impossible to see development that early, and they cannot develop in 70-75 F temperatures. I doubt it's development. If it is, I would guess that your hen had sat on the egg and started the growth. I posted pictures of my quail eggs on day 3.. I know, you're dealing with chickens, not quail, but this is exactly what I would see in a chicken egg around the 4th day of incubation.

Should I see blood rings at a little less than 48 hours? I'm gonna try not to candle anyomore until day 7.
