This was the first time ever I’ve attempted incubating my own chicks. I was extremely doubtful - looking after a bunch of brown, unmoving, breakable rocks for the last 21 days. I candled at day 14 and couldn’t see or tell much about what was inside (Marans). I had 4 thermometers and 4 hygrometers going - yes, overkill.
But I really wanted to make sure I followed the suggested settings as close as possible.
This morning (day 21), I added more water to keep the humidity up to about 60-65%, checked eggs (and nothing of course) before I left for work.
When I got home, I fed my kitties then went to the incubator to add water. I saw what I thought was a crack in the side of one egg. Oh, no.
My heart sank .. did split because it’s bad? Did the rest all die?
I got a small flashlight and shined it in to get a better look. And - just ever so faintly - I heard a couple peeps.
Mind you, I have few week old chicks in the bathroom in the room over. Maybe it was them? Peeps again.
That was definitely from the egg! And it moved!
Figuring it could still be a couple hours until it made it out, I went outside to do some yard work and take care of my other livestock. I came back in about an hour later and I’ll be damned .. it was already out and about!
I have 8 eggs total and this is the first. Hell, if it’s the only one that hatches, I’ll take it! I may have to do this again - lots of happy right now!
