First time hatching

Since they mentioned not being able to get ingredients like soy meal, I think they are trying to make their own feed.

Well I found purina game food for breeding and that's what my adults are on right now and the chicks are on the chick version of that and my chicken scratch I threw out into the desert for the mice and birds

Its gratifying to give someone good advice and see them heed it, you've done good.

I believe the results will be apparent.

As of now they are still getting starter feed. Yes my ultimate goal is to make my own feed. They already get most of the veggie scraps that don't make it to the compost for the night crawlers.

There are some threads for making quail feed in the forums.
When I read them, it sounded like way too much work for me.

I'm ok with work. My goal is to have 500 plus birds in the future so if there is cheaper ways to make my feed to sustain there needs I'm all for it.

Good luck and if you need help shoveling poo....don't call me!

I find it hard to imagine that you would be able to buy components and prepare your own feed cheaper than the feed mill, they buy in bulk and in large tonnage and unless you're able to buy that way, you'll be paying a packaging outfit...I just cant see it.

And to try to do that volume required for 500 birds is going to be a nightmare.

If your going to keep or raise quail or any game birds you owe it to them to feed them right. Giving them a diet of scratch or chicken feed it like you trying to live on a diet of Hersey Bars. They love it but it has no nutritional value. Stick withy the game bird feed (22% or higher) protein. Turkey feed works great too if it is mashed up. Feed them right and you and your birds will be much happier.
