First time in the snow, what a hoot!

Your snow story sounds hilarious. You described it so well; I could easily imagine how they all bumped each other out the pophole door.

That's for sharing a laugh!

Glad you all enjoyed it-I really dont think my telling did it justice though, I wish I could have had it videotaped, it was so funny! Took forever to get them all chased outside. Only my little brown leghorn hen was brave. She flew out the top door as usual, and didnt mind the snow a bit. She is impossible to catch and tends to come in at night only when she is good and ready, and then she roosts up in the rafters, a good 6 feet above everyone elses heads. She comes down to lay a pretty little white egg and back up she goes!

I had to shovel my run today, 2 ft drifts in there. I cleared out the middle and piled the snow at the edges to cut the wind. The hens thought it was funny to follow me and 'help' but when I went inside, they did too! Clowns...

Our chickens are the same way with snow! We keep them in a coop with a pen and even when their dirt is changed, they act like big babies and refuse to go onto it. They don't like anything new.

I had to dig my run out (shoveling was not too bad, lake effect snow). They wouldnt come out til I did. Then I put some hay down for the girls.
They perched on top of the rocks. EEEEEEK!

I have a great picture in my head now of how it must have looked to see them fly up to not touch the foriegn white cold stuff. hehehe

We got our first big snow today and so Dh goes to let our girls out of the coop, after whacking the snow from the run roof. Opens the pop hole door and a leghorn hen starts to go out and then stops short on the run and goes right back in. Her sisters were like - hey, what the ... so another one goes out and does the very same thing. heh. Apparently I am going to have to make them some booties.

Dh is still wondering if they went out or not.

They will probably make me shovel a walkway too, esp since there is nothing to fly to for them in our run yet.

moenmitz, thank you for the morning laugh. As soon as I wipe the coffee off the keyboard I will re-read for more chuckles.

Very funny description!

Both of my sons read this and didn't stop laughing at the way you described them, that was amazing and certainly brightened my day,

Thank you. We have not had snow, but we did have a real cold snap, and 2 of my girls are now laying regularly, so they are being very verbal, and keen to tell me all about it, so I can imagine the picture so well.

Many many thanks for the giggle.

Jena.

Yeah, it was pretty amusing this morning. First off, I have to say that deer netting makes for a nice roof…it had stretched down by about two feet in places, but popped right back up when I swatted it with a broom.

Anyway, I always open the pophole before I leave for work, and it’s usually a mad tumble of chickens, even in cold weather. Today, I open the door…and nothing happens. One white leghorn sticks her head outside, peers about for a bit…and goes right back in. Can’t say as I blame her…given my choice today, I would have done the same thing.
