Hello,

My girlfriend and I are first time chicken keepers recently. She is a teacher and recently hatched out some chicks in her class as a learning opportunity for the kids. We had always talked about getting chickens prior to that so when the opportunity arrived we figured we should go for it! So in the time it took to hatch the chicks and get them out of the brooder we through together a 4'x8' coop with an 8'x8' run. We did not have a choice or know what eggs she would be getting so it was interesting to watch them grow and guess what they were. Didn't take long to figure out they were Cornish Cross. We were...less than thrilled about it. They are 9 or 10 weeks old at the moment. Just last weekend we processed half of them. First time for that part as well. The remaining are going to be harvested this weekend or the next.

Once we figured out we wouldnt be getting any eggs from the original batch we decided to expand a little. We first got 2 Rhode Island Reds. Then a couple days later 3 Barred Rock. Its crazy to see how small the new birds are compared to the cornish even though they are all about the same age. We are looking to add a couple easter eggers to the flock and will hopefully call it good after that.

So to give a final rundown of our roster:
4 Cornish Cross
3 Rhode Island Red
3 Barred Rock
2 new chicken keepers
and 2 curious dogs

Nice introduction!

Thank you for the welcomes! When we only had the cornish cross we didn't understand why everyone said watching chickens was so entertaining. They just lay around all day. After the reds and barred rocks though it sure is more fun to watch them!

LOL ... that is funny. Also, just noticed you are in Oklahoma. Type Okies III in the search bar, click on it, and say hi there too.
