First time Maple Tappers!

See, and I was worried about it. How do you keep the bugs out? We have a real issue with bug infestations and I'm going to have to take down two of our older trees due to rot and bugs.

Is there such a thing as a tree band-aid that I could put on it temporarily?

I've got way more sap than I can handle here too. I'm actually thankful that yesterday and today have been very cold and not much has been flowing. It's going to warm up again into the 40's over the weekend and all next week. Whee!

Ive never had a problem with bugs and we got lots of them here to, small ants will use the hole till it drys up and while its in use(end of season for the ants)..
miller moths love sap as well and you will see them in the holes to and in your sap containers catching the sap..these moths appear in the late part of the season along with the small ants here. Just strain well..
after that, the bugs may use it to hide in. but it will heal up with out any problems. with 125+ tree's i must say they do very well in healing.
mostly what i know i was taught by big sugar bush operators and learned a lot from them..

no band aids that i could recommend..

This last weekend, we boiled all of Friday afternoon, all day Saturday through Monday, and Tuesday morning. We shut down at night and start up again in the early AM. By the time I was done with the bottling Tuesday morning we had over 3 gallons of syrup. It was a busy weekend and this weekend looks to be the same! Check out our set up here. Will swap syrup for eggs (in the fall though).
