I got a pair of birds from a friend last November and made them a very nice pen 12x24 outside and an adjacent 12x12 inside. The outside has sun and rain protected area.

She started laying eggs in late May/early April . I tried to incubate the first 10/12 with no success so I left the resultant ones for her to deal with herself. She didn't leave the 6 eggs for a month at which she had 3 chicks. This has in the outside part of the coop. The day after they were born I found one chick soaked and bloody (obviously pecked) but after taking him inside to a heat lamp he recovered and I put him back in with her the next day.
Before I did this I separated the male to the outside from the hen and chicks on the inside.
This had been the status quo for 16 days and the chicks are happy and healthy but the hen sorely wants to be back with the cock. I was amazed that the baby's could fly at 8 days!

My assumption was that the male attacked the baby for some reason. But maybe the hen did it because she only wanted two baby's to take care of. I'd like to let them back together so they could enjoy outside and in but not sure if the boy would attack again.

Any insights ?

Hello Jay, and a hearty

Sorry, I can't offer you any insights into your current problem, but I'm sure some of our more experienced peapeople will be able to help!

Supervised parental visitations. Let him in for a visit and see how he acts. I have hatched two clutches in pens by peahens and one by a chicken, no losses yet. With the chicken it is an experiment with only one chick, she is doing a great job and none of the free ranging peacocks, ducks, guineas, other chickens, or our GPs have harmed the peachick.

Last year I had a clutch hatch out in a pen with about a dozen other birds including two cocks, no problem. This year I have a clutch of four chicks in with two other broody peahens, a cock, peahen, and about 50 keets and 20 chicken chicks. Momma rules the roost.

My male hasn't even bothered my peachicks that are with him. Though the peachicks used to fly up on his back but he wouldn't do anything.

The area they roost is 2 feet tall. They also fly on top of a door that is 4 feet tall.
