First time raising chickens for me in Wisconsin

Hello,
My wife and I are going to attempt to raise chickens this year. We decided on doing this not only as a resource but as a tool to teach our daughter some life lessons. So far we have no chickens, no coop and nothing else. I do have a coop spot picked out and this weekend I am going out to get supplies to build the coop so I am ready as soon as the ground thaws. As of right now I am not sure about how many of what kind we are going to raise. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
