First time raising chickens in Parker Colorado

First of all, great site! It's been very informational and helpful already.
We first got interested in raising chickens this year and have never raised before. We already have many pets but we wanted to try something new that not only was cute but could produce some food and further increase our victory garden (at this point I think eggs will be it, the daughter/wife already are too attached).
Local regulations are prohibitive of raising chickens unless you have 3 or more acres so any advice that could help in changing ordinance would be greatly appreciated.
