It's hard for me to tell, but I'd guess pigment? Did that bird have white feathers over the belly in the same area?

It doesn't look dry, but sometimes dry gets discolored looking.

If you get a bird that doesn't bleed right all the vessels are pretty full of blood (a few vessels have a little blood left in them usually)

That skin is more orange than red, thus I'm saying pigment. You can see a red minor bruise on the one wing tip, which is more typical of blood by the skin.

I see a breast with skin and wings and legs w/out skin. I also see no slit where the crop was taken out. How did you dispatch and process them exactly?

I didn't look closely at those legs before. Though it is out of focus, that right leg looks like possible inflamed skin. Not a big deal necessarily. If it were me, and it was a little inflammation, I'd trim the skin and fix it in one of various ways so the drumstick doesn't dry out during cooking.

But again, hard to tell on the legs from this shot...

PS- One can certainly fish down and pull out the crop, but I think I see a little bulge that could be crop sagging down. That's easy to find and pull out.

Was the duck sitting in a pan with a bit of water in the bottom? I find that the skin will take on a reddish hue if it sits in water with even a little blood in it.

Next time, mine are going up on a rack before they go into the cooler to keep them out of any water that collects.
