Hello all. Gotta question about roosting. Our 16 week old Crested Polish Buff will not go on the roost by herself. We go out every night and roost her and she stays up all night with our other 5 hens (cochin, rir, americauna, and 2 golden buffs). Are there girls who just prefer not to roost? Or is it a sight issue due to her "DO"? Thank you in advance.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Some birds do take a while to learn or have the desire to use a roost bar. If they other hens are bullying her, she won't want to roost with them on the bar either. You might install another bar for her. Maybe another bird will roost with her there too. When roosting time comes, I would go out and listen or watch from a place you won't disturb them as see what might be going on at roosting time. But it is important she does roost with the others, so I would continue putting her up until she either learns or is not bullied enough that she gets on herself.

Good luck and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! X2 on what TwoCrows has said. Polish frequently have problems with other breeds bulling them due to their restricted vision. You can try the separate roosting bar that TwoCrows suggested. Another thing you might try (I never did, but some Polish owners do) is trimming the feathers in front of her eyes so that she can see better. Hopefully one of these solutions will work. Good luck with your Polish.

Hello TwoCrows and thank you for the reply. We've been doing it for about 7 weeks now and we're not giving up because she'll sleep under the other girls if we don't and get pooped on. I don't think it's a bullying issue either because she is the boss lady of coop.

Alright

This photo was taken last winter of my EE pullets who did not want
to roost and would leave the coop to sleep out side on the front porch
but now it is summer and they are off the porch and roosting on the
swamp cooler and yes it is running and they all crowd up there and
stay all night .....

Again in May a couple of months ago the same pullets roosting
over some of the young chicks that were occupying the cage below ..

I hear you Michael. Gonna try another bar that's not as high and hope she can see it. Might try a trim also.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, try trimming her crest feathers back an staggered bars so she can get up on the higher ones easily.
