Hi all,

After a year of debating, we are finally getting chickens! We have a perfect spot (per our research), and a coop! Looking forward to asking many questions here! Here's my first:

We've got a coop for 6-8, and plan to start with 4-5. I've got 4 Rhode Island Reds pullets that I want to get from a local farm. My neighbor has a new flock, raised from chicks, similar in age. She thought she would loose a few, but hey all made it. She is interested I giving us two, but I certainly want more than that. I know introductions need to be made slowly and quarantining is also a factor. However, I'm wondering if it is ever a good time to introduce them at he same time since it's a new environment for them. Any insight or recommendations appreciated!

When you introduce them, keep an eye out for bullying and featherpicking

Congrats on your flock. I'm glad you decided to get some! Sounds like they are lovely too. Great breeds!

You do need to quarantine for at least 2 weeks. I know it's a long time but if he is sick, he could get the whole flock sick which would be awful. I know some people who introduced a chicken who didn't seem sick and wasn't quarantine. Half the flock died because of her illness.

Once you do introduce them, make sure they are separated by a barrier so they can't attack each other but can still see and meet one another. After a couple weeks, let them mix. Provide them with lots of feeders and waterers so that none of them starve.

Best of luck!
