First Timer - Processing Today

I have been thinking about this a lot lately because our hens had chicks and it seems like a majority of the chicks are turning into little roos.
It is funny because my husband refers to fish, how it is just like that and also lobster.....
I think I can more easily justify killing the birds because 1, they are humping my girls and 2, if we don't get rid of them, there will be no room for new little fuzz butt chicks in the spring.

DH and I are also doing this today. I have planned this from before we even got chicks. I remember having "gizzard duty" when I was a little girl. I even watched my Dad chop their heads off. This just seems different somehow. I have'nt made them pets and we have told DDs from the very beginning. I still dreamed about this all night. I'll be so glad when it's done. My DH and DDs put the roos in their cage last night as I was working. This am when I went out to open the coop, it seemed very empty. I will get thru this.

Just focus on the entire process rather than just the killing (which is a small part of the whole thing, really) and you will be fine. Once the bird is dead, it is just like working with a carcass you bought at the store. That's why they call it "processing".

Let us know how it went.

We did it! DH and I processed 23 roos in about 5 hrs. Boy are we tired. Things went very well. I'm really happy. The birds weren't as big as we expected, so we decided that if we do this again, it will be w/ meat birds, not dual purpose. In any case, it was a success.
