We've got one chick as of around 1:00 am today! No signs of any more yet, but sure as heck hoping. We started with 13 eggs and by yesterday were down to 8. Hoping at least one more will hatch so this little one won't be all alone....
Two hours and 20 minutes since my last post, and there's a SECOND PIP!
No further movement from the one egg that pipped. So, even if I managed to kill that one - (no valid reason to think so, I'm just "positive" I will do something wrong "just because") there's at least another live chick!
So, at least two out of seven means those excellently packaged shipped eggs survived the USPS and 22 days in my house. (Hadda let them sit a day after delivery.)
Ohhhh... even if something catastrophic happens and nothing hatches and lives, I am now really impressed with the Brinsea Mini Advance incubator. I think I'll go look in the BSA to see what hatching egg auctions are going on, and if any are breeds I want.
Oh, maybe on Monday I'll just go to the nearest Trader Joe's and pick me up some fertile eggs to try to hatch.
(I don't want to start with my own fertilized eggs YET because I'm still a'scared I'm gonna do something wrong, and I need to blame something other than myself, y'know? USPS, TJ eggs, yadda yadda.)
But let me go peek at the eggs in my incubator, again.
Oh gryeyes, you are so funny! Two pips and already planning your next hatch
I guess you must be having fun.
I promised myself that I wouldn't stress about this whole incubation thing, and one day into it, already I am worrying. When I went to turn this afternoon (I got the Eco, no auto-turner), one of the eggs felt a tiny bit cooler than the others, so of course I must have set the incubator set up wrong, or put it in the wrong spot, or something. Or maybe I am imagining things.
We did our own eggs first thing after we got our incubator set up and calibrated. It was so fun, especially since all our older chickens are various breeds we acquired at TSC and Orscheln's. The mixed ones are so pretty! I think you'd love trying eggs from your own hens. Besides, according to Chicken Math, chickens hatched from eggs your own hen lays don't count!
Sorry to be bumping my own thread like this, but FOURTH PIP!
I am SO jazzed! I don't know if they'll survive and actually hatch, but FOUR eggs pipped out of 7 shipped eggs. Wow. And one of the pips - #3 - is an actual hole in the shell, with what looks like the tip of a beak poking out.
oh i am so eggcited for you , i am going to be doing this hopefully by next weekend........it will be my first time and i know i will go crazy waiting and watching and worrying
