hello everyone my name is Michelle an i have four chickens not sure of the breeds. i got my chicks at one day old they are nearly three weeks on Tue an growing really fast.they spent there first night outside last night in there chicken hut an they settle really well .there names are Rosie ,Zola, daisy. Louisa.they are enjoying being outside as its all secure for them.in there run. when do i need to start them on grit? an anything else while there outside they have chick crumbs at the moment an fresh water. i also have four bearded dragons one staffy dog oh yes an lets not forget the gold fish. four children only one at home now as rest have flown the coop .

! Great to have you with us! You can start your chickens on grit now - get fine grit as they are still small. They are probably at the point where they can have it free choice rather than sprinkled over their food. Good luck to you!!

Chickens lack stomach acid like humans, so they need grit to help aid in their digestion. The chickens need grit whenever they are fed any treats that needs chewing. I don't feed my chickens grit because they live in a sand/dirt run and have access to this the majority of the day. If your chickens don't have access to dirt or sand, and you are feeding them treats, then grit is needed.
