So today I decided to give the oatmeal a try for my ducks and chickens.

I put it down, and you all know as chicken owners what chickens do when you put something new in front of them.
So after a bit Sally my 3 1/2 old NH red (I didn't know they could eat oatmeal until recently) was the first to try it. well she really enjoyed it, it took a bit for my Cuckoo maran to try and she was happy with it.My bantams and ducks were like umm no.
My ducks wouldn't go near it, but I am hoping they will eventually get used to what the new food is. It different than any other thing they have seen, (tomatoes, cabbage, collard greens, apples etc)

Luna my cochin bantam, has just gone broody again, so I tried to get her to eat some, she loves eating out of my hand, but nope, even poked her in the beak with it lol.

Anyone else's chickens/ducks like oatmeal?

I wish I would of know about this before when poor luna and Sally spend the winters without any nice warm oatmeal.

Nope , but I’ve made fermented feed with warm water ... they knew it was good but warming it up made them very sceptical ....it was cold before they decided it wasn’t going to kill them

In winter on really cold days I mix oatmeal and my all flock ration with warm water to warm my birds up. They absolutely love it. People think I'm weird when I buy like 8 oatmeals at a time in winter. :)

Sometimes you need to introduce a new food a couple of times before they accept it. I have a brave sex link that try’s anything that I make a fuss over. But if she poo poo’s it all the others will walk away.
So one day I asked my husband to go and buy some electrolytes, told him they were on the baby isle at the store.
What did he buy???? A bunch of those baby food~squeeze’y pouches. WHAT?? LOL so I mixed it in with oatmeal VIOLA!! A new fan favorite of my girls.
One thing super about oatmeal you can serve it with just about anything mixed in. And serve it warm in winter I feel good about that when it’s bitter cold.

On the weekends I get all the food we are done eating, grapes bananas, anything that would typically go down the disposal or in the trash. I put it in a pot, add some uncooked rice, maybe some pasta and always oatmeal. I cook it until the rice and pasta are done and let it cool. I fill up a qt size zip bag and freeze. I take out one bag of frozen food after I get home from school, around 4ish, put it in a bowl and let them have at it. It cools them off, sometimes they just stand on it! And no food goes to waste. By the time they head into their coop, it’s alll gone! Our winters are pretty mild here in Houston but I wouldn’t do this when it is cold. They need a hot toddy!

My chicken absolutely love warm oatmeal in the winter. I make it a bit runny and add meal worms and a lil bit of lay mash to it. They go crazy for it and with warm water it makes a great start to a cold -20 day.

my chickens LOVE oatmeal! But, I have a secret recipe🤫, well, I guess it’s not secret. After you cook bacon and remove from the pan, take oatmeal and put it in the grease. Use enough oatmeal so the grease is evenly distributed. Your chickens will go nuts. I call this chicken crack!
