First Wounds. Are these serious?

How long should I keep her separated? How do I introduce her back into the flock?
TIA for all your replies.

I don’t have saline. I have povidone-iodine and have watered it down till the liquid looks yellowish. Will that work? I also have some ointment.

Hmm. I don't want to advise you on iodine, because I'm not sure if it could damage the healing tissue. You can get saline at any grocery store or pharmacy. I think you can also make it at home. (I've started buying a saline spray from the first aid aisle).

Someone else might advise you on the iodine, but please don't use it until you're sure it won't damage the healing edges.

I've had really good luck with Vetricyn. If it's very cold where you are, be careful about putting any product on her injury, as it could freeze on her.

Be careful keeping her separated too long---there can be aggression on return as they try to reestablish the pecking order.

Do you have like a large dog cage where she can be in the run, visible to the others, but safe from them?

I put her in a dog kennel and attached a nesting box to it inside my greenhouse. I will keep her here overnight and return her to the flock inside the kennel tomorrow. I did put ointment on the wounds. Hope it helps them by the morning.

What a great set-up!

I've made a large dog crate a fixture in my run. It makes it easy to isolate a hen (for example, to see how much they are eating in a day, or to know which poops are theirs) without having to totally isolate them.

I hope she continues her healing!

checked her today and she got these horrible wounds on left leg and on her right side. I have a chicken kit but not sure what to do. I’ve already separated her from the flock with water and food.

The deep one is her right side between her leg and butt. The other long one is on her right leg.

Im worried about the open wound being so deep and the other being green on the sides. The other chicken(s) did this.

You can use Povidone Iodine to clean the wounds, it works very well.

Apply some ointment after cleaning the wounds.

As mentioned, the green is bruising. Possible it's all from picking/plucking from the other birds, but is there any chance a predator could have gotten a hold of her?

Thank you for the assurance on the povidone. I did apply some ointment after the povidone. My chickens aren’t free ranged. I keep them in their large run because I’m paranoid and we have hawks and other predators. None of my other chickens have wounds. I have seen one of my other chickens peck at this one in the same spots as the wounds so I can only conclude that it was chicken to chicken attack/pecking. Right? I just hope the wounds heal and she can be re-integrated without a problem.

Hopefully with you putting her back in the coop/run inside the cage/kennel she will stay familiar with the others so re-integration isn't too big of an issue.

If you have time to let her out and socialize while you're cleaning, etc. (with you present and monitoring) while she's healing, this can also help too.

Is there anything sharp inside the run/coop that could have sliced into her? The wounds look like cuts. The others could have seen the blood and started to pick on her after the damage was done. Just another thing to look for.

This morning, I moved her inside the kennel in the run with the others. I had errands to run till around early afternoon then I let her out and stayed there. The others are still pecking on her. And whoever was doing it I put them in the kennel as time out. Not sure if that helps but I know they don’t like being in there. I’m going to keep her separated overnight so her wounds keep healing. Then I’ll do it all overalls again tomorrow and put some painless peppers on the bully one. Hope it helps. Any other tips or suggestions are welcomed.
