That's a terrible story but I agree with the fear-mongering part.
I cut my finger open when a fish bowl that was used as vase for fake flowers broke. It needed to be sutured due to the size and location. It was a nice clean cut but when I told the doc that it was a fish bowl he said I needed antibiotics. I told him the bowl had never held fish or even water... but the fact it was a 'fish' bowl meant he was giving me a Rx for it. (I never filled it... and I healed just fine)
