I've noticed so many people making negative comments about using fishing line as a deterrent for hawks. I agree that this isn't 100% but many of the comments are from people who haven't tried it.
Unfortunately, I was desperate and had to try something. We were leaving for vacation the next day when I realized several of my pullets were gone. I found the fishing line idea on BYC. My friend and my adult daughter volunteered to put up the line so my husband and I could leave as planned. (I didn't want to go but my hubby was counting on this trip). I haven't lost another chicken since-not one!
I can't speak for all situations but I have nothing but good to say about what it did for me!

what exactly do you do with the fishing line? I took my pullets out for a supervised outing and saw a hawk :-0

I ran it back and forth and criss crossed across the top of my run. The spaces are maybe a foot apart. I was told that a hawk won't go into a place if he isn't sure he can get out quickly. Eventually the line breaks. I replaced the fishing line with orange twine this fall. My chickens could still get out but it was hard for them to get back in. I was able to put bird netting up easily because of the twine I had up. I used just the fish line only for from June to October and didn't lose even one chicken!

It may very well work, but how long have you used it? Losses to hawks not every day. More than one person (several) needs to test it ideally they need to be experiencing losses on a regular basis and ruling out other predators.
