My Jersey Giant girls are only five months, but one started laying last week. She's been laying one small egg a day. My concern is that today she has been working on it for hours. Usually, she goes in, works on it for a little bit, then comes back out and goes on with her day. Is she ok? I tried checking her vent and it didn't look red or swollen to me, but I'm also a newbie when it comes to the birds. Any advice appreciated.

I have a few pullets that take longer than others. I was concerned at first and kept checking on them but have learned to leave them be as first time egg layers. I will say mine are faster in and out of the boxes now that they've been laying regularly for a couple months.

Egg laying is complicated!!

Yes, I definitely wouldn't want to have to lay eggs. 😁 You were both right- she finally did lay and it looks the same as her other eggs, so I guess she just needed more time today.
