Id say its too soon to tell, officially. Give it a couple more weeks. This is one I've been speculating could be a roo. It has the biggest body of the 11 4wk chicks and 2nd to last in the amount of feathers. I'm leaning cockerel due to the lack of tail / feathering, the comb seems to be getting a bit of a broad bump to it, and it seems to be starting some shoulder patches. Fizzy also gets a stance, standing up pretty straight with 'her' neck stretched up but looking down on another chick with the little tail feather nuns straight up in the air.
Are these shoulder patches starting? Or am I being too anxious over every little detail? If we do have roos we will likely sell them, or keep one, we are zoned agricultural so thankfully no ordinances.
I'll update over the next few weeks also since it is early.
Guesses welcomed!
Chickens don't start growing spurs until they're around 8 months old. I say 'chickens' because both hens and roosters can have spurs. I have a hen with spurs. Its not a very reliable way to judge sex.Cutie! I don’t have roosters, but should the little guy have spurs as a rooster? I have no idea if those grow later. Thank you for sharing pictures
We heard him make a weird squawk the other day, almost sounded like an attempt to crow. He is also making sure everyone knows he's boss, there are still 2 others that will spat with him, it makes a big commotion and gets everyone stirred up. And anyone who makes a fuss he rushed up to them and tries to tower over them, or he'll just jump and stomp them if he turns out nice he'll have a home in the coop, if not, he'll have a toasty home in the kitchen.Looks like a cockerel! Crazy how those feathers came in so early...

He's definitely bigger and more meaty than the other chicks. We're going to see how he does, if he's a good roo to the flock he could add some value. If not, yep, chicken soup! He’s a cockerel. Chicken soup for dinner!
