I've done chickens off and on for years, but I just had a first with an egg.

Basics: Hen is 2 years old and this was her first egg this spring.

Please take a look at the photo's and descriptions and tell me if you have any ideas as to what causes this or if it is just a fluke thing. I would like to take corrective action ASAP if it is needed.

The exterior was flakey, but held together when the flakes were peeled away.

And the yolk/white was a creamy mess.

It looks like a soft shelled egg. I think the flaking is a combo of shell and excess calcium. I know that sounds weird. Something happened just before, and on into the shell gland. The shell/calcium material was not distributed evenly. Not all of the white got incorporated and came out after. Does that make sense? It's the best I know how to explain. Anyway, it would not surprise me if she also has just started laying again after a lengthy break. She may lay a few of those and then be fine or it could get worse. Keep a close eye on her to see which way she goes.
