Hi everyone! I just joined. I’m a city girl (based in Raleigh NC) with a small flock in my backyard. I started keeping chickens in 2019 with zero experience! I’d only even held a chicken one time before, but that was all I needed to know I was in. Since then, I’ve had a flock of about 4-6 female chickens at one time (no rooster), known affectionately as The Flapper Girls. Today I have four hens: Serena (sapphire gem, age 6 yrs) Pegasus (sapphire gem, age 6 yrs), Peaches (Easter egger, age 3.5 yrs), and Gemma (black Australorp, age 3 years).
Backyard chicken-keeping has taught me so so so much about chickens but also about life, and about myself. In some ways it is much harder than I expected, but also incredibly enjoyable and satisfying. Despite the occasional drama and even the grief and loss that can happen, I keep coming back for more of the good times with my special ladies. I love making them happy and keeping them healthy (as best I can!). My favorite aspect of chicken keeping is having chicken friends who know and trust me, it makes me feel special.
I’ve also learned a great deal about handy-work and backyard construction; husband and I built the coop and chicken run ourselves, and we are actually building a new, better coop right now. Chicken-keeping is my main hobby, but I also enjoy cooking, holiday-making, and watching Star Trek. I am also a human Mom, plus a dog mom and cats mom - there are little critters everywhere! Never a dull moment.
I have found BYC many times over the years usually when researching health issues or coop-building advice. Glad to be here officially!
