Hi,
I posted the first photo on Friday, and responses pointed to Flavus and suggested miconazole for treatment.

I started that on Friday night, and the comb is now black. (Pictures attached) I have not done anything else besides apply that cream topically.

Does this seem like a normal progression?

thanks!

Is the first pic 'before treatment'?

Any chance that's frostbite?
I thought it might have been the onset of favus or some type of fungus in the "before treatment" pics, but it obviously isnt neither.

@Bostonburbs I've never dealt with frostbite in chickens since I've lived in the deep south most my life. I'll see if I can get you some help from some folks living up north including; @aart @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

What have you been putting on the comb lately to treat favus? That doesn’t look that much to the frostbite I have seen which usually causes the tips to freeze sometimes down to the base of the comb. Her tips look pink. Could you have put something on the comb or could she have rolled around in dark dirt or wood ash that has turned the comb black? I might be wrong, but it doesn’t look like frostbite.

I recommended miconazole cream for favus and that's what Bostonburbs put on the comb. I've dealt with favus and the miconazole worked. The combs never turned black, they cleared up after about 10 days treatment.

Good point....also initially only one side was discolored.

It definitely isn’t frostbite; we’ve had daytime temps in the 70s here, and fairly mild nights. No ash that she could have gotten into - in response to @Eggcessive - and it looks to be a change in her actual comb flesh, not dirt or debris.

Hoping someone might be a super sleuth in figuring this out with me. She doesn’t seem uncomfortable, but I am concerned.

Does it look like it could be mites? I can try to get better pictures in the morning, if that would be helpful.
I have been looking at her legs this week, and wondering about mites as well. They are not far off from “smooth and healthy,” but I wonder if there is something more going on.

If that is a possibility, I would love your advice on how to proceed. DE, poultry dust, spray, dish soap, Vaseline.....the options seem endless!
