Flies everywhere!!! HELP!!!

Fly traps attract flies, not a good thing. I agree about the permethrin, although I use the dust under the shavings in the coop. I get the fly predators from Spalding, and they really help too. Mary

I get an empty spray bottle, add 3/4 of water, 1/8 of soap, 1/8 of vinegar, and some vanilla extract. Right after I clean the coop every morning, I spray it all over the floor(not tons, just enough to get it everywhere) let it sit for a couple of minutes and the brush it away with a broom, seems to work because all the flies magically disappear

Vanilla scented car "trees" No joke,, i didn't believe it myself when I heard about it. But I thought, what the heck,, give it a try,, is only 99 cents for a 3-pack at walmart,, if it doesn't work, at least my car will smell nice :p Well, here it is the hight of summer and fly season for us and there is hardly a single fly in the laying house and breeder houses,, It really works.

There are several ways to get rid of flies without chemicals but they may not all be appropriate.

Horse pal has a contraption that will rid your barnyard of horse flies and deer flies. I have one and it works really well. Early in the year we couldn't be in the barnyard 10 minutes and we would be swatting at them. Two months later we rarely see them. Horse Pals are about $300.00 on line but in my opinion are worth it. the animals aren't running around like crazy beasts anymore and we aren't either.

Horn flies and face flies are different. some of them wind up in the horse pal but not a significant number of them. We got Muscovy ducks and they ate all the flies that would go low enough to the ground for them to catch them. I had heard the ducks tore apart cow pies and ate maggots but these ducks eat flies and catch them in the air. I have never seen a duck so fast.

We had a significant number of horn flies, face flies and house flies in our hen house before the ducks. We still see them but not in large numbers.
