Flies, flies and more flies

We don't have our coop finished yet but we have lots of fruit trees that in the summer attract flies, fruit flies and gnats by the zillions. We finally found the solution at Home Depot. I don't know what they are called but they have a clear plastic bag that you pour water into through a small hard plastic hole at the top. Something in them that attracts them but does not attract more than what is there. They were more interested in the bag than our lunch so it was great! Within a few hours the 2 bags we bought were chocka block full.
The good thing is that the flies get squished to the bottom as more flies enter so makes more room for them. We ended off only using the 2 for the whole season. Quite cheap under $10.
We will get a couple more to hang near the chicken run when we finally get the coop up and running along with the DE.

Fortunately, Utah doesn't have very many flies in a suburban setting, just some small houseflies. Farming property would probably have a lot more if other animals are kept. Ever been bitten by a horsefly?? Not pleasant!! My 'lorp pullets try to catch flies when they see them. The poop attracts flies, alright. I keep the chickens in a tractor cage and move it around my lawn daily. Them I hose the poop down into the lawn where the cage was, which is easy to do when it's not yet dried out.

Just a word of caution on the fly traps that stink real bad.
I've used them for my horses for years and they do work, but they also draw
stray dogs and coyotes. If it smells dead something wants to eat it.
I was planning on putting one in my coop and changed my mind when I thought about it.
I think I'll try DE.
