Thanks for posting this question. I am in SE PA & just starting getting a fly problem this past weekend. I've spread PDZ & DE all over the run & coop (we have a double layered large "tractor" style coop). It has been very rainy here so the ground is just saturated. It won't dry out. It leaves it very hard to clean the coop because just by nature, some water makes it into the run (through the waterer or by spraying down the coop to clean). I put straw down & pine shaving with DE mixed in & still get flies. I rake the run at least every day (sometimes twice a day because I'm a clean freak). It's turning into a real chore. Not quite sure what to do either, but I think I'm going to try to make the homemade traps, as well. Sounds like a good plan to me!

like I said it is a cheap solution to a pesky problem. Our problem is I don't buy sodas,my kids think I am so mean because I don't buy Cokes or Dr Peppers, so I have to get creative and reach out to family and friends for their old soda bottles which they willingly give to me. I even have a couple hanging in the house because I have 5 kids and it is summer time so it is constantly in and out all day long no matter what I say.

thank you all so very for all your suggestions and helpful answers i went ahead and used my diatomacious earth that i got a big bag of at the TSC and it has been working pretty great already... i also put a little on my chickens thank you very much

We don't either! I happen to have two bottles of Coke that someone brought to our house for a party last weekend so I plan to use those bottles. Otherwise, we never have them either. My kids think I'm mean too ;-)

We don't do soda either. I had to resort to buying the discount Wal-Mart brand sodas to make mosquito traps for my house. The kids used to think I was mean until we started making homemade green tea witn mint and honey. Then they decided that soda was subpar. Lol

I put diatomaceous earth in the food to keep the poop dry. It also will kill the maggots, if any. I use one of the disposable bag traps that smell so bad. I use deep litter, and keep it turned. Together they pretty much do the job.
