Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Mint is one of the best fly repellers out there. Lemongrass, dill, basil and rosemary are all good too. I'm not sure about bees. You might try marigolds.

Flies can be hard to repel. Definitely try the herbs. Flies and bees don't like certain smells. I use sand in my coop and run and it keeps the flies away. Flies like damp stinky areas and sand is very dry and absorbs odors.

You can also post this question in our Predators and Pests section for lots more input on this...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests

Good luck with this and welcome to our flock!

This subject comes up from time to time. A lot of people swear by those little yellow Xmas tree car deodorizers in vanilla scent. They claim flies do not like the smell. You might try "Fly repellents," in the search box.
