Flies Killing My Chickens?

Sorry for your loss Tommy. We just put in a very large window in our large coop. My chickens sit on the ledge of the window all day eating the flys and other flying insects. We are using fly strips too but they fill up in 3 days so I am going to use the suggestion of a 2 liter fly trap. Best of luck on resolving your issue(s). God bless. :)

When I lost the first bird the day before, I chalked that one up to the heat, but then when the second one passed from the same coop, I wasn't so sure. My other 2 coops are fine and they have young birds in them. I keep tubs with frozen water bottles in them for my birds to roost in, They stay on those ice roosts most of the day and they also have fans blowing on them. I don't just give them the ice bottles once a day, I am home during the day so I change them out during the course of the day. I definitely will look into the link you sent me. Thank you very much for that. I never wet down my soil, I have my birds under a great shade tree but of course the sun still hits them somewhat. I want to thank you for your advice and help. I still don't know if it was the flies or the heat but I am leaning toward the flies only because these were my hardiest birds and were in the same coop (which happened to be a fly haven for some reason lately) and they passed on back to back days. Hopefully the deaths are over. I still want to rid my yard and coops of the fly problem though. I will try to keep everyone updated. Thank you again and God Bless. I really do appreciate everyone's help and advice.

Thank you so much. I never realized what a problem the flies could be. I will be prepared for next summer, that's for sure. I guess it will take a combination of treatments to be very effective for now. My coops do have great ventilation but the heat is crazy. I just ordered a camera system, I hope that will allow me to stay alert to what's going on with my birds. The 2 birds were my best layers but more importantly they were 2 of my "original" chicks when I first ever started keeping chickens. Well. thank you so very much and God Bless.

Warmly,
Tommy
