Flies, Odor and DE (with Photos)

Stupid question alert...

What is DE?

I did a search but it would not let me do a search for only 2 letters!!!!

Diatomaceous Earth. You only use Food Grade DE around chickens, not the kind Lowe's and Home Depot sell.

I have used Diatomaceous earth in my garden... it did not even occur to me this was what DE was...lol! I bought it online but I don't believe it was food grade.

So...do you just sprinkle it around...do they eat it? dirt bath in it? I thought it was like fiberglass...so food grade is different? I read in previous posts that some add it to their chicken food?

I am interested in this because we have flies...not really odor (yet) but the flies are driving me crazy!!! LOL!!!
