Flies!

We tried something this year that has turned out to be the best fly control ever! We have a dog kennel (commercial) and can have up to 35 dogs at any time. We also have sheep, goats and around 50 chickens. We've always been careful to keep our animal areas clean and dry (immediate cleanup with good drainage and a barn that is cleaned regularly), but the fly issue was always a problem. We use the "fly predators" from Spaulding Labs and our fly population has dropped to almost nothing. They automatically send us 15,000 of these little insects every 3 weeks and they lay their eggs in the fly larvae, killing them. The flies never get a chance to hatch, so they never reproduce. The predators themselves are non-invasive and not at all noticable. The directions say to spread them on the ground, but the rep at Spaulding Labs told me to hang them so that the chickens don't eat them. They cost less than $20 per 5000 (the amount that would be needed for a small area) and you can choose to have them shipped every 3 or 4 weeks throughout the summer. We started late this year so we already had flies. It took one generation (21 days) to really notice the difference. Next year we plan on ordering for our first shipment the middle of April before we even see a fly.

We have had a serious fly problem this year, and DH finally made some traps that have really worked for us. He takes a 2-liter bottle, cuts off the top 1/3, and in the bottom section he mixes water to the bottom of the "ring" of nubs on the bottle with about 1/4 - 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of vinegar. Then he inverts the top and stuffs it down into the bottom section, making a funnel that the flies go down into. The spout of the bottle should be above the liquid, so the flies get trapped in the bottle and drown.

It doesn't smell really nasty, and it works really well! The vinegar keeps the honeybees from getting caught in the trap. Just don't leave where animals or people can knock them over!

We use these in conjunction with fly tapes, and although nothing is 100% we have been pretty happy. It is very important to get rid of flies, as they harbor a lot of nasty things ~ they are part of the life cycle of many kinds of worms, diseases, infections, etc.

Good luck!

I also use the fly predators. We used them for the first time last year. Our first year with horses. We really had nothing to compare to since we were just starting, but let me tell you, our shipments stopped in the fall, but we had several more weeks of warm weather and the flies were awful after we stopped! Spaulding sent several reminders about ordering extra shipments depending on the weather, but I didn't know any better. We had an early heat wave this year and I saw a few flies early, so I ordered extra early shipments. I'll be watching the weather this fall. This year we've added a goat and several chickens and the flies are really under control. They don't work for water breeding flies though, so blackflies and mosquitos are not affected. I will never go without fly predators!
