Flight Netting

We used cable across the top of ours and bird netting--the stuff you put over berries so the birds don't eat them. It worked quite well in the summer. In the fall, we had to blow the leaves off and pine needles stuck in it and looked kinda funny. Then winter came and we had a freak snow storm that dumped over a foot of snow (we usually get an inch or two at a time.) I would have thought that the bird net would be torn to pieces, but no, it was all fine--the fence posts broke and we had to replace them

So this year we are taking our chances with the hawks--so far no problem even with the banties.

I have the deer netting over my silkie pen, which is mainly covered with trees anyway.
I think I paid $12 dollars to cover a 10*10 pen, which is an old dog kennel.

I covered my run with about 1 inch square (diamond?) fishing/sport netting I got on eBay (I think it was Florida's Nets or something remotely like that). I dyed it dark green with Rit dye to be less conspicuous. It's supposed to be really strong, and wasn't terribly expensive. It was a little bit tricky to work with by myself, but it turned out well and I would recommend it.

I'm not a BIG Ebay fan....I can't really say I ever got a bargain on it, although you can find about anything you want there...difference is want and need at what price. The deer netting look's like the best deal (retail) and I have friends that have used it and are happy with their results.
This hobby can be a bit pricey and I'm getting cheaper in my old age, however something that looks nice does cost you...like stock car racing...speed cost you....here - function and how it look's cost you.
