They should start laying soon if mating has begun, usually 5-months on up to 9 months depending on breed. my last Muscovy girls were 7 months before they started to lay. They could have eaten something that didn't agree with them, if you suspect something like that you can give molasses in their water for no longer than 8 hrs, and also give activated charcoal in their water, not the charcoal bricketts that you use in grilling but in the supplement isle. I looked for activated charcoal at Walmart last week though and they didn't carry it. But both molasses and charcoal will help move toxins out of their systems.
What works for me sometimes (labor intensive) is to pull some good charcoal (no wood left) out of our wood stove ashes. We only burn clean hardwood, so we know it is safe. I brush off the ashes or rinse them and let them dry, which takes a long long time. Or, if I need to use them right away, rinse them thoroughly then grind them up, damp, in a mortar and pestle. The back of a heavy duty spoon in a heavy duty mixing bowl should work, too. Anyway, then I add that to the water. As far as I can tell, activated charcoal is simply finely crushed charcoal. I just want to emphasize what Miss Lydia said, not the grilling briquettes!!!! Toxic!!!! Because that has chemical accelerant in it to make it burn more quickly.

Anyway, if you cannot get out, or find the activated charcoal at a store or pharmacy, making your own is an option, if you are sure of the source.

(Makes a decent tooth powder in a pinch, as well. I have done it. Tastes pretty much like nothing.)

cool! ...tooth powder???please explain

I have some charcoal for human consumption...it is pure and in capsules that I can pull apart to get to the powder...but I am glad to know how to make more in a pinch if needed :) Thank you!

I just dampen the toothbrush and pick up some of the powder and brush away. You might want to be sure the bathroom door is closed. One's appearance while brushing with charcoal is not for the faint of heart. Looks ghastly! But it cleans nicely!

Hi Annabelle,
Came across this thread just now...just a thought...if the niacin doesn't help, your ducks might be getting seizures from duck viral hepatitis, type 3. This is a slower form of DVH that can still strike at 8 weeks of age, and it would cause seizures such as the duck falling on its side or back and paddling its legs. Have the ducks been vaccinated for DVH? A duck coming down with DVH type 3 will look depressed and separate itself from the flock a bit, maybe eat a little less, and eventually have seizures and eventually die within a week or so of when the seizures start. Could you isolate the ducks that look sick and those that have had seizures to protect the rest of your flock?
You don't have to wrap up a duck that's having seizures, just place it in a small room well padded with towels, etc. It's less likely to hurt itself that way. Aside from vaccination, there is no official cure for DVH. But I give my ducks a nanosilver solution nightly (Silver Biotics or Patis 30) that supposedly cures any bacterial/viral/fungal infection.

My Call drake was acting the same way this past winter. I took a bowl and put good water (water we use) in it, an egg yolk (not the white), and a big bunch of brewer's yeast. I gave that to him, and my other ducks I had about 1-2 times a day and in a day or two it cleared up. Do your babies have acess to grass and bugs?

My ducks are all FINE!!! Yea, they did free range in the yard as they were still to young for the pond ...but now they have graduated and they are on a pond full of all kinds of pond plants and weeds during the day...they also still rummage through our yard several times a day as well ...that is why we got them to help keep all the vegitation down so my DH can fish more :)we put them back on starter grower and vitamin water and we have not had another incedent :) thank you everyone!
