Hi, thins is my first post. My neighbors dog killed half of my chickens he said he would pay for them but I have no idea what to charge them as some of them were rare. I had a Americauna‘s, Rhode Island Reds, polish hens and one female turkey. Anybody know how to price laying hens??

Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Which breeds do you have that are rare? Where did you buy them from?
Be reasonable with your neighbor. Figure the replacement cost of the birds or find out what these breeds are selling for in your area.

In addition to the purchasing price of the replacement rare breed chickens, don't forget to have them pay for

  • Your precious time and phone calls etc. for searching and finding the replacement birds.
  • Gasoline cost to drive and get them.
  • Loss of eggs that would have been laid otherwise by your former chickens. It will take time (weeks or month) for the new ones to lay.
  • Time for cleaning the yard of the mess left behind by the dog.
  • Cost of purchasing new fencing plus gasoline.
  • Time to drive and buy the necessary items for clean-up and repair.
  • Necessary items including everything you need to clean up the mess and repair the damage.
  • In case you dont clean up and repair yourself: Have the dog owners pay every cent for the necessary clean-up and repair of the damage caused by their dog.
  • Cost of labour is not cheap, no matter whether it is someone else doing the job or yourself.

It is important to make them see all of the trouble you will have to go through (plus a heavy heart) and that it is not only the purchasing price for new rare breed chickens.

I am very sorry you had to experience this terrible loss.
