Good Morning everyone! I just wanted to relay some information on a attack on my flock last night. I pride myself on the fact that I have a pretty fortified coop and that I have not had many attacks on my girls too often. But last night it was like Freddie from nightmare on elm street showed up.
I heard a ruckus about 11:30 pm ducks quacking like crazy, so I jumped out of bed to see what was going on. By the time I had arrived in the coops, this is what I found. Hole ripped in roof on run size of beach ball. One hen ( older brown leghorn,) mutilated, totally destroyed. One barred rock hen broken leg and possibly wing injury. 2 hens just plain ghosted, no sign at all. 1 full sized buff Orpington hen and one full sized black sex link hen. Pile of feathers found outside cool at base of live oak tree. I am assuming attack was done by one of 3 things. 1. Group of raccoons, barred owl, or possibly a bobcat. It was a tough and long night cleaning up aftermath and repairing roof. But will try and figure this out to protect and save my flock. This season in Texas the weather has been very strange and I am thinking this led to the attack. Unusual amount of rain and muck this season which helped the varmint to have easy access to my flock. So I just wanted to post so others in area will be on the lookout and take my advice, be on alert.
