How do you call your flock in from freeranging? Or do you? I usually let them stay out until they put themselves to bed, but occasionally need to call them in early (tonight I had company and I don’t leave my flock out unattended... lots of predators.) To get them in early, I do this...

I guess I use the universal,,, Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep. My mom did same. I usually bring a treat as well. (bread crumbs work well)
When I'm feeding my squirrels, I usually keep repeating, Here cutie pie,,, got some food for you,,, here cutie pie,,,got some food for you..
They don't really understand the language, but the tone of my voice is something they can remember, and the resulting action associated with it. They never run away.
Same with the chickens, they can associate a sound to action that will occur.

Pretty much the same here. I say, "chick, chick." Shake my can of treats. Tell them, "time to go in".
Of course, if they are in their run and hear the side door of the garage open, they are running to the edge to see if I am coming over to them especially at certain times of the day.
For the ducks, I say, "duckies"....followed by the same pattern. :D
Why do our voices get higher pitched when we do this?
