Any ideas on tilt angle to get the right rol on the egg so as not to smash them? Am not paying for freight to Australia LOL.

I am fairly new to chickens and mine have only been laying since November. While my girls get plenty of calcium in their feed which is supplemented with oyster shell, they do spend the majority of their days free-ranging. I have noticed that a few of the girls, when they are just beginning to lay, have begun with a soft-shell. These are never laid in the nest box, always from the roost. But the regular eggs they lay are very thick-shelled, much harder to crack than store eggs, so I think it may be more of a new-layer than a calcium issue.

FortWorthChicks said her hen laid a softie on the ground. I'm curious, has anyone ever found a softie in the nest box?
